Artist's Statement

This series of macro photographs of butterfly wings grew out of an appreciation of butterflies instilled in me by my mother who was a park naturalist. I wanted to focus attention on the design and color of the wings themselves rather than the insect as a whole. After collecting hundreds of butterflies from around the world, I arranged the wings under glass to produce abstractions. Note: no butterflies were harmed to produce these images. They were all gathered from the ground after a natural death.
